Spring training is just around the corner and with that come new starts for all the teams in Major League Baseball, some teams are expected to stay on course (Yankees, Angels, Dodgers, Phillies) some are hoping for redemption (Mets, Cubs, Indians, Rangers) some are expected to fall (Red Sox, Marlins and Blue Jays if that’s even possible) and there are some left just hoping for a little bit of sunshine in a time where they’re rebuilding (Orioles, Nationals, Athletics) but while all of the sports writers predictions build up stories and make the season interesting there is one team that I will be rooting for even though the outcome this year may not be that different from last season. The Kansas City Royals. They last one won the world series in the year that I was born, good old 1985. Since then it’s been all downhill and they’ve been sitting at the bottom of the AL’s central division for what seems like an eternity. As a small market team they can’t compete with the money of the New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago’s but they’re doing they best they can to get the ship turned around. In 2009 they signed Zach Greinke and now AL Cy Young winner to a 4 year deal, a great signing. The kid has more potential then anything else and had a hell of season in 2009 and is willing to stick it out in Kansas to improve the team. Greinke is probably one of the most exciting pitchers to watch in the entire league and reason enough to tune into a Royals game, that and he has a smoking hot wife (Miss Daytona Beach anyone?) He is the kind of player that a team can really rally behind and begin to build. It’s a way for the team to know that when he’s on the mound that your team really has a chance to pull out a win. Aside from Greinke there are players on the team with a lot of upside such as their DH Billy Butler who recorded 93 RBI’s in 2009 including 52 doubles and 21 home runs, not bad for a 24 year old kid. They’ve also got Alberto Callaspo who I think will bounce back from a poor defensive year at seconds base while still recording 173 hits and veteran left fielder and what seems like lifetime Royal David Dejesus coming into his prime and ready to help his younger teammates grow along the way. So there you have it, as a Chicago Cubs fan maybe it’s just the sucker in me to root for the team that may never get it done but I’ve got the Royals back, I like the way they’re approaching there teams development and even though they may not win a pennant in the next 5 years I think they’ll come around make some good pushes and have some good seasons.
